We Lithuanians love bread. And by bread we usually mean dark rye bread! It is used in Lithuanian cuisine as much as Italians use the white bread in theirs. This Lithuanian fried bread with cheese sauce is super delicious and is a perfect option for parties!
Lithuanian Fried Bread with Cheese is so popular that you will try it in each restaurant in the country. This fried bread with cheese is so much loved by the tourists! Who knows maybe one day we will find this recipe among the best Italian recipes! 🙂
It is with no doubt that if the Italians tried this bread, it would become part of the Italian recipes. Immediately! This Lithuanian fried bread recipe (in Lithuanian “kepta duona” or “kepta duona su sūriu”, if served with cheese sauce) will work for an appetizer, even with a glass of red wine. By the way, I sometimes eat it with salad! Ohh it is so good, can’t wait to make it now. Ready to move on?The Lithuanian fried bread can be prepared in two ways: the regular fried bread and the fried bread with cheese. Both are super yummy, I prefer the one without cheese as the flavor is already so strong. Yet the one with cheese sauce is a real Lithuanian recipe! If I just could, my Instagram profile stories would be 99% about this cause I simply love love love it!
Generally, this homemade garlic bread is super good with beer (I don’t drink beer but this is kind of a standard mix at the pubs!!). I love making this bread at home, and I usually do it over the weekend so I do not need to go to work the day after. This is only because of the amount of garlic. Well, you know what I mean 😀
You absolutely have to try making this bread, it is super delicious and a great option for the appetizer.
And I promise to share the recipe of cheese sauce soon. Remember to follow me on social to be the first to get updates!

Hello Domi, do you have the recipe for the cheese sauce for the fried bread? I would greatly appreciate.
Hi Diane, sure!
You will need: yellow fermented cheese, mayo, garlic
Shred the cheese (this is the type of cheese I use: https://www.pastapestopizza.com/rokiskiosuris/, Emmenthal would work too yet I find it a bit bitter) and let it melt in a pan on low heat (microwave will work, too!), stir continuously, once fully melted, add the mayo, mix well, then add minced garlic (I love garlic so I tend to put A LOT! 🙂 )
The sauce is best when eaten hot, if you have some left you can still re-heat it but it looses the texture as the oil tends to separate.
Curious to know if you’ve made the fried bread? Did you like it? Ohhhhh I wish I had some now!
Cheers!
Domi
